Background & Experience
Janet
Baker received her B.S. in Public Relations
and her M.A. in Communication Studies from San Jose State.
She has held a number of positions in public relations and
has taught oral communications and debate at Oakwood Country
School. At CSMH, she
teaches a communication enrichment class and a journalism
elective at the middle school level.

Oral Communication
How do we effectively communicate with each other? Students will
learn the basic concepts of communication. Concepts they will
learn include nonverbal communication, group discussion, listening,
problem solving, conflict management, and interpersonal communication.
The main focus of the course will be to effectively deliver an
oral presentation. They will learn how to build confidence in
their delivery skills, properly research a topic, and how to organize
a speech. The oral communication skills students learn in this
class will help them in all other areas of their studies, future
careers, and life.
Journalism
Ever wonder what it takes to be a journalist? Learn how to explore
your world as you discover the people, issues and events that
form the news. You will learn the basics of publishing a newspaper
including how to recognize news and report it responsibly, write
in the journalistic style, and copyediting. You will become better
writers and critical thinkers. And, you will use these new skills
to create a school newspaper. Explore your world, expand your
skills and express yourself as a newspaper journalist.
